Let's get Walking!

Smart Journeys were commissioned to act as the Travel Plan Coordinator for a small housing development located in Eaton Socon. The residential site is approximately two miles from St Neots and connects to the town centre along a beautiful traffic-free shared walking/cycling route, adjacent to the Great River Ouse. To meet the objectives of the Travel Plan and to increase active mobility, Smart Journeys were keen to raise awareness of these scenic trails.

Our approach

Smart Journeys graphic design team set about developing a fun and engaging walking guide which included an easy-to-read map. The map detailed local amenities and services which were all within a short walking distance of the development site. The guide includes information on the benefits of walking and reviews some of the best fitness apps and journey planner tools available on the market. The walking content was created to help residents explore their local area and inspire them to make more journeys on foot.

To embed long-term behaviour change residents were given the opportunity to apply for a £50 active travel voucher. The objective of the £50 voucher was to enable residents to pay for equipment that may be preventing them from making walking journeys e.g. waterproof jacket, hi-viz clothing, appropriate footwear.

Success so far…

The programme has been a huge success and the walking guide is part of a series of behaviour change communications and activities aimed to motivate residents, remove barriers and to help adopt positive behaviours away from private car use.
